Walter Edward Carroll, 96, left us on October 1, 2025, after several weeks in the Dallas VA Hospital.
He was born on December 28, 1928 in Hot Springs, Arkansas to Henry Larkin Carroll and Gertrude
Marion Harris who preceded him in death. He grew up in Chicago with his mom.
His military career began in 1946 when he joined the Army-Air Corp and served in WWII in Japan until
1950. In 1950, he transferred to the US Air Force and served all over the world, including Adak, Alaska,
San Antonio, Tx, Portugal, 3 tours in Viet Nam and various other locations. He retired as a Tech Seargent,
E-6 in 1971.
His civilian career as a US Postal employee started in 1971 and he retired in 1999. Concurrently with his
postal time, he was a reserve officer with the Grand Prairie Police Department, retiring after 9 years of
service with them.
Walter enjoyed reading and learning, riding his motorcycle, traveling, music, keeping up with current
events, photography, computers, watching movies, being outside watching nature in the sunshine, and so
many other things. He loved ice cream and watermelon. He also, loved cold things very cold and hot
things very hot.
His selfless, generous, open, and loving personality made him liked and loved by all who knew him. He
was witty and funny. He listened and loved deeply. He was nicknamed “Poppy” by his grand-daughter,
Brandi, who also preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Sherry Carroll; his sons Michel Carroll (Tamelia), Ronald Carroll
(Pilar), Brian Carroll (Jackie), daughter, Valerie Carroll, step-daughter Khrystell Shelton and step-son
Russell Shelton (Crystal); and numerous grand-children, great grand-children and great-great
grandchildren.
Walter, was preceded in death by his son, Walter E. Carroll, Jr.
There will be a private, family only viewing at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, October 20, 2025 at the Eastgate
Funeral Home located at 12973 LBJ Freeway, Garland, TX 75041, 972-270-6116.
Walter requested donations be made to St Jude’s Children’s Hospital in lieu of flowers.
Graveside service will be at the DFW National Cemetery, at 2:00 p.m. on October 21, 2025.
